Provide vocational training and job creation opportunities.
Projects like our sewing program enable Haitians to move beyond looking for a handout, and instead teaches them a marketable skill so they can provide for their own family with dignity. Certainly, there is a time to help a brother or sister in immediate need; but we believe developing men and women who can provide for their own needs is the best way to help Haiti long-term.
Orphanages throughout Haiti are filled with tens of thousands of children who have loving parents that have been forced to abandon their children to an orphanage because they can not provide for their basic needs. Most of these families would prefer have their children in their home if they could only care for them. Providing vocational training and equipping men and women to start their own sustainable business KEEPS FAMILIES TOGETHER.
In some cases we help families who have children at the Les Anglais Orphanage get back on their feet and reunite. In other cases, we help families in severe poverty avoid getting to the point of desperation where they must put their child in either an orphanage or a restevek (child slavery) situation. In either case, we are proud that our programs help families stay together and provide dignity to these hard-working men and women.
